Disney to Close Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in Late September

The Star Wars hotel has struggled with popularity, even with Disney heavily discounting stays

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a hotel that offers guests an interactive two-day experience. Unfortunately, the hotel will close in late September after 18 months of operation.

The Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser is a unique two-night experience aboard the Halycon. This Chandrilla Star Lines vessel served as the honeymoon destination for Leia Organa and Han Solo in Disney's backstory. This isn't just any ordinary "Star Wars hotel" that went viral when Disney announced its plans. Guests are invited to become characters in the Star Wars universe and interact with cast members playing the Halycon crew aboard the ship, creating a cruise-like adventure.

Disney Released the following statement on the closure of the Hotel:

“Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is one of our most creative projects ever and has been praised by our guests and recognized for setting a new bar for innovation and immersive entertainment. This premium boutique experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans.”
We will be contacting Guests booked for voyages departing on or after Sept. 30 to discuss their options and modify their plans. To prioritize these Guests, we are pausing new bookings until May 26.
We are so proud of all of the Cast Members and Imagineers who brought Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser to life and look forward to delivering an excellent experience for Guests during the remaining voyages over the coming months.

Where did it go wrong?

Since opening in March 2022, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser has had a tumultuous journey. Although the experience sold out during the first few months and bookings initially appeared strong, they started to decline once the initial rush was over. Some cruises are now only filled to 50% capacity.

Many predicted the outcome of the Star Wars-themed hotel announcement due to its high cost of $6000 (£4800) for a family of four. This made it unaffordable for most families and fans of the franchise.

The Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser had a dedicated team of hardworking, creative, and enthusiastic cast members at the Walt Disney World Resort. Disney's Imagineers and show production staff also developed award-winning innovations for the project. Additionally, the experience received high guest satisfaction ratings at Disney World.
